The number of paid jobs is increasing rapidly in two Canadian provinces. In March 2022, the number of jobs increased. In compared to the decade preceding the pandemic, the surge was quite high. Vacancies have climbed by 22.6 percent, bringing the total number of job openings to 186,400.
The job vacancy rate is calculated by dividing all vacant positions by the total number of jobs in Canada. In March, the unemployment rate rose to 5.9 percent.

The removal of pandemic limitations resulted in an increase in job openings.
According to the Survey of Employment Payrolls and Hours, payroll employment climbed to 118,100 in March. The growth in payroll employment, along with the relaxation of public health measures, resulted in an increase in job openings. In some cases, immigrants must produce proof of COVID-19 vaccination. COVID-19 testing is also required in some situations to work in Canada.
In March, the three provinces listed below witnessed a small gain in paid jobs:
- Nova Scotia
In Quebec, the hospitality industry saw a boom, resulting in the creation of 20,400 additional paid employments. Job openings grew as bars, casinos, and taverns reopened on February 28, 2022. The total number of service industry employment in the country increased to 103,400. This was owing to an increase in the number of job vacancies in the hospitality business, which totaled 46,200. Retail employment increased to 14,800 in March.
Workers’ average weekly earnings increased to $1,170 in March, representing a 4.3 percent increase year on year. Despite an increase in the average wage, purchasing power is diminished due to inflation.
