Over 271 million people worldwide decided to migrate to a new country in 2019. The UK was one of the top five countries for Indians to migrate to because of its rich culture and abundance of STEM jobs.
If you’ve been considering moving to the UK and want to learn more about jobs in the UK for Indians, the documents you’ll need, and how to get help along the way, keep reading.
Jobs in the United Kingdom for Indians
According to a survey, there were approximately 176k job vacancies in the United Kingdom from enterprises with 2.5l or more employees in the three months leading up to November 2020. In November, however, there were 77k vacancies for medium-sized businesses employing 50 to 249 people.
The UK’s current economic climate is flooded with jobs that aren’t being filled by its own citizens. These jobs, known as those on the SOL (Shortage Occupation List), may otherwise go unfilled unless a skilled foreign worker comes in and takes over.
Because of the increasing demand for SOL jobs in the UK, they are among the easiest positions to obtain visa sponsorship for.
Among the most popular job fields on this list are:
- IT & Technology – software engineer, data scientist, web designer, and so on.
- Creative– film editor, graphic designer, etc.
- Healthcare– Doctors, nurse, paediatrician, veterinarian, etc.
- Secondary Education– Mandarin or Math Teachers
Look no further to learn about the documents you’ll need and how to get assistance along the way. There are several important things you should know before moving.
Documents Required for UK Job Applications
You must submit a spotless application, just as you would for any job interview or application.
A well-written CV
Most applications will necessitate a resume/CV based on the UK job market. In this section, you will include your personal contact information, the most recent relevant work history, any specific trade skills, references from previous employers, and education history.
Mention your honours and accomplishments.
Some people include any awards or achievements they have received on their resumes; however, this is not required and can cause resumes to become clumpy and overcrowded.
While not always necessary, including a cover letter with your resume is usually a good idea. This is a separate document in which you can boast about yourself!
Application letter
Cover letters are not the place to be humble; you only have one or two paragraphs to convince your employer that you are the best candidate for this position.
A quick tip: Begin your cover letter by thanking your employer for reviewing your application and end by expressing your eagerness to discuss your qualifications with them further in the future.
Permit to Work
Employers will prefer you over others if you have a work permit. Individual applications will differ depending on your job type; for example, if you are applying to be a writer, you may be required to submit writing samples.
Immigrating to the United Kingdom with a Job Offer
Depending on the visa you choose, you may be required to provide additional documents or verifications before the visa is issued.
We’ve broken down the process for you here so you know which visa to choose and how to apply:
General Visa Tier 2 (Tier 2 Skilled Worker Visa)
When the new UK points-based immigration system went into effect on December 1, 2020, the Tier 2 General visa category was renamed the Tier 2 Skilled worker visa.
This is the most common visa option for Indians migrating to the United Kingdom for work. A Tier 2 skilled worker visa allows you to live and work in the UK as a skilled immigrant for an extended period of time.
General Visa Requirements for Tier 2
Your job must be on the Tier 2 Shortage Occupations List in the United Kingdom (SOL). Check the table below to see if your job is listed in Major Groups 1, 2, or 3.
You will need to have
- To pass the English Language Test and submit your score, you must have a job offer in a skilled position and proof of sponsorship from your employer with a Tier 2 sponsor licence.
- proof of financial resources to support yourself and any dependents while in the UK.
A valid passport, a valid certificate of job sponsorship, a police clearance certificate, and a complete travel history over the last five years are also required. Finally, you must provide your tuberculosis test results.
Employers must meet the Minimum Salary requirements.
The salary threshold for Tier 2 (General) is greater than £30,000, or the 25th percentile of full-time earnings. The salary threshold equivalents for new entrants are £20,800 or the 10th percentile.
Time required for visa processing
Tier 2 General Visa applications are typically processed quickly, and you should receive a decision within three weeks.
Visa fees
The cost of applying is determined by the type of job field and the length of time you will be there.
- If you work in an industry in desperate need of workers and stay for less than six years, the cost is 464 euros (about 150 euros less than if you were not in a shortage job field).
- For the past six years, the cost of a job in need of workers has been 928 euros.
Tier 2 Visa Application Procedure
There are two major steps you must take in order to obtain this type of visa. The first will be completed by your employer, and the second will be completed by you.
To begin, obtain a sponsorship licence. Employers should apply for one on the UK government’s website, and all employers must meet the Resident Labour Market Test requirements.
Second, you must include the CoS (Certificate of Sponsorship) number in your Worker Visa Application. You will also submit all of your required documents here.
If your visa is approved, you will most likely move on to the next round of interviews.
Other Visa Alternatives
While Tier 1 and Tier 2 visas are the most popular options for workers, there are other circumstances in which you may require a visa for immigration.
UK Global Talent Visa
The UK Global Talent Visa is reserved for highly skilled and qualified individuals, such as professors or doctors in specific fields. If you are granted this visa, you are not required to have a job lined up ahead of time.
This visa, which was introduced on September 11, 2019, allows foreign students to stay in the UK for two years after completing their studies beginning in the 2020-21 academic year. It allows them to look for work after they graduate.
Undergraduates and master’s students can stay in the UK for two years with the UK Global Talent Visa, while Ph.D students can stay for three years.
Students will be able to work during this time, which will also count as their first period as a new entrant.
Standard UK Visitor Visa
The UK Standard Visitor Visa is available for those visiting the UK primarily for leisure, sports events, business trips, or private medical treatment.
Visa for a UK Spouse
The UK Spouse Visa is available to those who are lawfully married to a British citizen, who are in a long-term relationship with one, or who intend to marry a British citizen within six months of arrival.
Visa for UK Students
Indian students who have already secured a place at a registered UK educational institute and wish to enter the UK to further their education can apply for a UK Student Visa.
Visa for UK Ancestry
The UK Ancestry Visa is the final popular visa option for Indians. This option is available to those who can demonstrate a family connection or history in the UK.
Check out the full list of these UK visas here to learn more about the costs and requirements.

Making a Permanent Move to the United Kingdom
There is no grace period for staying in the country after your visa expires. There are, however, options if you want to extend or obtain permanent citizenship.
You have the option of extending your current visa. Make sure to apply online at www.gov.uk well before your current visa expires.
After extending your visa, you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain (IRL). An IRL would allow you to live and work in the UK indefinitely.
The following are the requirements for an ILR:
- possessing a Tier 2 Visa (or other applicable visas)
- proof of residence in the UK for more than five years, with no more than 180 consecutive days spent outside the UK in a one-year period, and meeting the minimum salary requirements
- evidence that your sponsor still requires you for your job
